From aspiring video game designer to influential accessory creator, Lowen De Neve’s journey exemplifies creativity, resilience, and community spirit. Through her business, Lowen Designs, she has carved a unique space in the design industry, particularly within the 2SLGBTQ+ community in Toronto and beyond.
Lowen’s path to becoming a designer was not straightforward. With a degree in 3D art and design, she initially aimed for a career in the video game industry, inspired by her peers. However, she soon realized this path did not align with her creative aspirations. “I wanted to find something more fulfilling and creative that aligned with my degree,” Lowen explained.
This quest for fulfillment led to the founding of Lowen Designs in 2018. Starting from her home with a 3D printer, Lowen began experimenting with various designs, which soon evolved into a successful line of earrings.
Finding Community and Success in Local Queer Markets
Initially, Lowen faced significant challenges in mainstream markets in Toronto. “The non-queer markets were expensive and didn’t yield the results I had hoped for,” she recalled. Many vendors were reselling items rather than offering handmade goods, which did not align with her vision.
Turning her focus to queer markets proved to be transformative. “I’m always killing it at the queer ones,” she said with a laugh. Through these markets, Lowen not only found success but also a sense of belonging and support from other 2SLGBTQ+ business owners and vendors. This community has been instrumental in her business growth and personal fulfillment.
For Lowen, Pride is more than an annual event, it’s a year-round commitment. Growing up in Windsor, she was familiar with Pride events, but the Toronto Pride scene was a revelation. “It’s nice to see a place in your community that reflects your day-to-day life. You don’t stop being queer after June ends, and neither does Church Street,” she shared.
Her business goals are closely tied to Pride. After successfully selling at various queer markets, Lowen aimed to participate in the Toronto Pride Festival. “I went from not doing many markets at all to doing basically the biggest market of the year, and it was awesome.” The connections she made through queer markets helped her navigate the complexities of such large events, from insurance to logistics.
Leveraging Interac Payment Solutions
Lowen relies heavily on Interac payment solutions. “I’m constantly using Interac products and services to collect payment at events,” Lowen stated.
Whether it’s accepting payments via Interac e-Transfer or allowing customers to tap with Interac Debit at markets, these tools have streamlined her operations and allow her to focus her efforts on connecting with her customers. “It’s so easy, there’s no reason not to be doing it this way anymore.”
Creating Unique, Expressive Designs
Lowen’s philosophy centers on creating pieces that are both unique and expressive. “I love making designs that people have never seen before.” The flexibility of 3D printing allows her to push creative boundaries and bring her innovative ideas to life. Her commitment to originality has also helped her avoid issues with design theft, a common problem among her peers.
Lowen’s design process is deeply inspired by parametric design elements. She enjoys the creative freedom of experimenting with artistic shapes and colors, bringing her 3D-printed designs to life. Her hands-on approach, often working from home, underscores that with patience and creativity, anyone can create something beautiful to share with the world. This dedication to her craft is evident in every piece she produces. As she shares, “If I can move forward just doing cool things no one has ever seen before, I’m winning.”
Overcoming Challenges and Looking Ahead
Starting Lowen Designs was not without its hurdles. Lowen faced significant challenges initially, however, her persistence and the support from the queer community have been instrumental in overcoming these obstacles. Participating in high-profile events like fashion shows and Interac’s Queer Marketplace has marked one of her most successful years yet, showcasing her work to a broader audience.
Lowen Designs is more than just a brand; it’s a platform for expression and a testament to the power of community. Lowen’s journey from a small home-based operation to a thriving business reflects her commitment to creativity, her community, and the values she holds dear. As she continues to innovate and grow, Lowen remains a shining example of what it means to create with purpose and passion.
Through her innovative designs and unwavering commitment to the 2SLGBTQ+ community, Lowen Designs is transforming the accessory market and empowering individuals to express their true selves. Her work enriches the lives of her customers and contributes to the vibrant tapestry of the 2SLGBTQ+ community. As she puts it, “Being queer is almost entirely about expressing yourself,” and through her unique creations, Lowen is helping many people do just that.
